Rebuilding and Rebranding
The Next Iteration of Transition US
in 2022, Transition US experienced a takeover, declining to seat a new board member and ousting several existing board members. Remaining board members had little experience with the Transition movement and essentially abandoned the national mission of the organization, although they retained the name. The new version of the organization no longer operated at a national level, nor did it maintain its connections with local groups or with the global Transition network.
Folks who had been involved with Transition Towns were not ready to lose the support that a national office could provide. Forty former board and staff members, local and national Transition leaders, partners, and funders sought a solution that would remain true to the original vision. They worked for two years to arrive at a strategic plan to rebuild the national organization in a way that could address the challenges we find ourselves as a nation, with:
-
Increased polarization within communities
-
Lack of leadership at federal and, in many cases, state levels of government
-
Increasingly challenging, even dangerous weather conditions
-
Greater financial instability than our nation has experienced in decades
The new organization we envision will:
-
Include a stronger focus on emergency preparedness, mutual aid, and adaptation while continuing to build more sustainable and resilient communities in terms of energy, food, local economies, and more.
-
Provide programming for individuals as well as groups.
-
Strive for inclusiveness in age, race, religion, ability, and political affiliation. This inclusiveness may be achieved through partnership with existing groups as well as starting new groups.
-
Create networks of connection with a wider variety of groups with whom we may have overlapping missions in order to make it easier to share inspiration and practical solutions.
You Can Help Make Community Change Efforts Possible
The next step in our process of creating this new organization is to recruit, select, and seat a new Board of Directors. That could include you!
